Insights on Prostate Cancer

Initially, since the male reproductive system has a gland called the prostate, cancer cells may metastasize from it to the other parts of the body, particularly the lymph nodes and the bones. This causes pain, difficulty urinating, problems during sexual intercourse and erectile dysfunction. Meanwhile, other symptoms can develop potentially during the later stages of the disease. Varying rates show that it is least common in south and eastern Asia, more common in Europe and most common in the United States.

For people who have not showed symptoms or occurrence of first signs, protecting yourself from this ailment is the best thing that you can do. Epidemiological studies show that dietary intake of selenium, vitamin E, lycopene and soy foods have a great role in reducing prostate cancer. This would also include high plasma levels of vitamin D. Another common activity that may reduce the risk of developing the disease is through more frequent ejaculation. In fact, there are some studies that promote the frequency of masturbation of about two to seven times a week for those in their 20s and 30s.

If a man has symptoms of prostate cancer, the only test that can fully confirm the diagnosis is a biopsy. Nevertheless, a screening can be performed to find unsuspecting cancers. This may lead to more specific follow-up tests where small cores of the prostate are removed for closer study. Since early prostate cancer causes no symptoms, it is important to become observant because some other symptoms may just be noticeable. Although it is uncommon in men younger than 45, it would become common with advancing age.

This may be treated involving active surveillance, surgery, radiation therapy, including brachytherapy and external beam radiation therapy, among others. Otherwise, if the disease has spread beyond the prostate, hormonal therapy and chemotherapy will be used.
